Norman Rockwell's Models

Wednesday, June 20, 2018  — Ken Gottry will host a session of local folks who were models for Norman Rockwell when he lived in West Arlington 1939-1953. Here's a sample of what you'll hear:   Rockwell wanted a fire hydrant for a painting. Ken's parents owned the Cambridge Water Works Company. Norman got his fire hydrant and Ken & Charlotte ended up on the cover of Saturday Evening Post in Rockwell's painting Walking to Church . Paul Adams and his sister Pauline Adams Grimes were in Rockwell's 1953 drawing United Nations but what they remember most was their payment, being allowed to pick an ice-cold Coke out of the snowbank outside Rockwell's studio. Ruth Skellie was 11 when Rockwell showed up at her grandparents’ farm in his rattletrap car, looking for a freckle-faced red-haired girl who could shoot marbles. Come and hear more stories behind Rockwell's painting.

The Surgeon is In

Wednesday, August 15, 2018 — A brief introduction to the healing arts of the Revolutionary Era. Come join retired park ranger Joe Craig as he explores the challenges facing healers in the era of the American Revolution: some of their methods, successes and failures. Not many people today have experienced real 18th century military life, but everyone has been to the doctor's at some point in their life. Historic medicine is a good entry point in studying almost any era.
